Step 1: Get your hands ready
Wash your hands well and dry them. If you have oily skin, you can wipe it down with a bit of eucalyptus oil to help the henna adhere better, but don't put on lotion right before.
Step 2: Draw the arm and wrist bands
Start on the forearm. Draw the thick horizontal bands and the intricate motifs inside them (like the floral patterns and the religious symbols). Then, draw the delicate hanging chains that drop down from the wristband.
Step 3: Draw the central arch and portrait
This is the focal point of the design. Draw the large arched doorway (mehrab) in the center of the back of your hand. Inside the arch, draw the bride and groom portrait. Because this is so detailed, using a stencil or a white pencil to lightly sketch the couple first will save you a lot of trouble.
Step 4: Fill the surrounding spaces
Surround the central arch with dense paisleys, floral motifs, and small dots. Use a fine-tipped cone to fill in the background patterns around the arch. This heavy filling is what makes the main portrait stand out beautifully.
Step 5: Detail the fingers
Cover the fingers fully. Draw the intricate bands and floral vines down each finger. For the tips, fill them heavily with a solid, dark pattern or "cap" to finish the look.
Tips for a Better Result
· Use a stencil for the central motif: Drawing a perfect bride and groom inside an arch freehand is very difficult. Use a stencil or trace a printout with a white pencil first to get the proportions right.
· Keep the arm bands symmetrical: The bands on the forearm are highly visible. Before you start, use a measuring tape or a white pencil to mark where each band should go so they sit straight on both arms.
· Watch the hanging chains: The delicate strings and dots hanging from the wrist are a beautiful detail. Use a very fine-tipped cone for this so the lines don't merge together.
· Keep the edges neat: The solid dark tips at the ends of your fingers are a bold detail. Keep those edges clean and sharp, as they are highly visible.
· Patience is key: Don't wash it off with water right after you scrape it off. The color will keep darkening for the next 24 to 48 hours. Adding a light balm (like coconut oil) after you scrape the paste off helps protect the skin as the stain settles.
